Reinstallation of Windows XP Home

Computer had a corrupted Registry and would not boot. So
I reinstalled windows xp home over the existing
installation. However the user profile under documents
and setttings had the private folder protection enabled.
The folder is still there but I can't log on to the
computer under my old log in. Also I can't access these
folders from a new user profile. How can I either
restore my old user profile or retrieve the infomation
from this folder?? PLZ HELP!
