Reinstallation of Windows XP: can't access old user account

I had to reinstall windows XP, but now I can't access my old user account
(which was password secured). I can find my user folder under "Documents and
settings", but when I double click on it, a message stating "Access denied"
appears. What can I do to recover my old files?
