Hi,

For some reason my system began to be unstable (eg. explorer.exe crashing)
so I decided to reinstall Service Pack 1. Up to that point I was up to date
in that I had Service Pack 1 and all the latest updates installed. My
question is: does a reinstall of service pack 1 overwrite files that were
updated through Windows Update or does the service pack leave those
untouched?

Thank,
Darth Elvis

Hi

What problems did you have that made you think SP1 had to be re-installed? If SP1 has to be re-installed, probably, the best way is to uninstall it first - via Add/Remove Programs - and then go back to Windows Update to see what is needed. If you have removed the SP1 uninstall files, then you won't be able to remove it.

If some of the Hotfixes in SP1 have been updated since that was installed, then reinstalling SP1 could have a detrimental effect on those Hotfixes.
