Just recently reinstalled XP Professional SP1 slipstream. And because my
client still uses old Netscape 4.79, I installed that afterwards. There is
(at least) one "bug" which occurs when installing this version of Netscape
ontop of an existing 5.5 or 6.0 and now 6.01 version: it screws up the
default settings for saving of bitmap files in IE from what should be the
standard jpg extension to a jpe or jpeg extension. Sometimes I think it
just assumes a .bmp extension as well, which makes for a lot of unnecessary
disk space for saving a simple picture.
After deleting temp files and changing settings back to default,
re-registering the dll files, resetting the .jpg extension, and all the rest
of the usual suggestions given here, I found the only reliable method for
fixing this annoyance was to just reinstall IE 6. In the past I used the
registry edit approach to change the installed=0 from installed=1 (I can't
remember the location in the registry or the Microsoft FAQ right now). This
worked with version 6.0 and earlier, but now with 6.01 it's a no go. Since
I've tried uninstalling in XP from Control Panel add/remove programs a 6.x
installation, but to no avail, what should I try? I do see I can uninstall
Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 at 14megs -- am not sure if this is the next course
or what. Hopefully there is some simple setting to change to reverse this
behavior
Thanks in advance,
