Reinstallation - Did I lose everything?

Our Windows XP system keeps rebooting itself (starts up, shows a black screen
that says Windows did not shut down properly and asks how we want to start up
- either safe mode, normal mode, etc.; tried safe mode & normal mode, but
each time I get a quick flash of a blue error screen, then computer reboots
itself and we go through the same thing. Can't read blue screen as it goes by
too fast. It's just one continuous reboot after another.)
Decided to reinstall Windows XP on a different partition. I'm not a computer
expert, so maybe I did the wrong thing here. Now Windows starts up ok, but
all files and programs are missing. It's like I have to start from scratch
and add all programs back.
Is there any way I can find the old files and programs from the original
Windows installation since it was in a different partition, or did I
overwrite it?

Installing on a different partition should not have damaged files on the
original installation. Unfortunately there is no way to migrate
programs from one installation to the next. They will need to
resintalled from the original media. You should be able to copy data
files though or restore from your backup.

Paritions show up as different disks. Go to My Computer to see what disks
you have. Maybe your data is on one of them

You nailed it. Start loading those discs.
