You shouldn't need to uninstall the storage driver. Just run the executable for the firware program
after reading instructions that come with it completely. Updating firmware can toast a drive so do
with a information available.
The instructions from NEC specify that if I have either Intel Ultra-ATA
storage driver or Intel application accelerator installed they must be
uninstalled or the firmware update will fail, which it did, so I'm stuck!.

Those two items "Intel Ultra-ATA storage driver or Intel application
accelerator" would show up in the Add/Remove Programs. If they are not there
then there is nothing to worry about.
You could always do the firmware update using an MS-DOS boot disk. This
way, no Windows drivers will be blocking you. The only requirement is that
NEC needs to provide the firmware "flash" utility for DOS.
I'll leave it for now, it doesn't seem worth the hassle!
