Optical Drive Disappeared

I recently noticed my Optical Drive is not working. It does not show up as my
D: drive on My Computer, but it does appear and work in BIOS, if I try to
reinstall my drivers. The thing that seems to have caused the problem was a
recently installed MS hardware update for a VIA IDE channel.

When I go to my Control panel, to access my system information, there is a
yellow apostrophe on the Primary IDE Channel which sits beneath my optical
drive, which is an Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers-266F,
which sits beneath the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

-IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
--Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers-266F
--(yellow !) Primary IDE Channel

I have tried rolling back the drivers; Uninstalling the hardware; Updating
the drivers; Reinstalling the drivers; etc.

I would like to uninstall the above mentioned VIA IDE channel update but
can't find it in the Remove Programs list. Yes I have the "show updates" box
selected. I have researched the updates that show in the Remove Programs list
via the MS website. They do not appear to apply, as they are MS software
program updates and not for hardware.

Any ideas for how to fix this issue??

Thanks,

Jim
