Reinstall problems

Hi Guys and Dolls,

You have been very helpful in the past and I am very grateful. My problem
this time is both of my laptops slowed down since I reformatted them and
reinstalledWINXP Pro SP2. I religiously updated my operating system with 58+
critical updates. One thing I noticed is when the microsoft .net framework
updates hotfixes were installed - that is when I noticed a tremendous
slowdown on both devices.

I primarily use my laptops fors business - do I really need this Microsoft
..net framework update? What does it do? Can I function without it. Moreover,
as you probably have heard Mc Afee came up with a new update with a
comprehensive Security Center (Firewall and Antivirus) of which I know cause
some of the sluggishness on performance.

Are there any conflicts on any of the updates, with the MC Afee security
center software?

As always, I thank you in advance and your help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

The .net framework is a runtime file needed to run programs written with
..net. It's roughly analogous to the old vbrunXXX.dll files needed to run
programs written in Visual Basic.

Because .net is relatively new, there aren't yet a lot of programs that use
it. A few months ago I had none. Today I have four. Even if you don't run
any of these programs now, it's likely that you will soon, so my
recommendation is that you might as well get this, so it will be there when
you need it.

Moreover, as you probably have heard Mc Afee came up with

Antivirus) of which I know cause some of the sluggishness on

My view is that McAfee is, next to Norton, the worst security software on
the market, and I would recommend you get rid of it entirely in favor of
better alternatives.

I would have to agree that both McAfee and Nortons are complete and total
resource hogs. I myself have never had any issues with the .Net framework
updates...Unless I ran Norton.

thank you guys for your propt reply so i guess the consensus is the security
center is the main cause on my laptops sluggishness. i may safely conclude
these anti-virus, firewall softwaresare necessay evils into everybody's
workstations huh.

You're welcome. Most security software has very little impact on
security. It's only some that are poor performers and and a s I said, Norton
and McAfee are the worst. If it were me, I wouldn't just say "necessary
evils: and let it go, but replace them with better choices.

Also, I'm not willing to say unequivocally that that's what all of your
performance problem is. It may be a factor, but there may be others too,.
It's hard to a diagnosis from afar. but other factors can be spyware or
performance-robbing programs autostarting and running in the background.
