Reinstall Problem

S

Skye

I am trying to reinstall a newer trial version of an old programme I had on
the PC years ago which I have since uninstalled through Add & Remove Progs
as it's so dated. Trouble is, the new prog still recognises that I am a
registered user and although it installs with no problem, I can't get it to
work afterwards, it freezes every time. I have run CMDisk Cleaner which
traces all left over applications and registry entries but nothing shows up.
How can I get rid of whatever's left over. OK, I can contact the manufacturer
but thought I'd try here first as it may be useful knowledge if I have the
same problem again in the future.
Thanks.

Skye,

The installation information is probably held in the registry. Without
knowing the name of the application...no-one can tell you which key to
delete

START | RUN | Type 'regedit' (no quotes) & press ENTER

Naviage to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[Your program name here]

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\[Your program name here]

You will need to expand those keys to find the information there. If you
cannot delete those with installation date then you will need to delete the
entire key

ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE TAMPERING

See here how to backup the registry:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Good luck

Skye,

Didn't add that also the information could be help in your application data
folder

My Computer | C | Documents and Settings | [username here] | Application
Data...

If you cannot see Application Data then open a folder | TOOLS menu | FOLDER
OPTIONS | VIEW tab | select SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS | APPLY | OK then it
should be displayed

There are two APPLICATION DATA folders (first as above & second is a
sub-directory of LOCAL SETTINGS (also hidden))

You had it right the first time: contact the manufacturer of your
mystery program.
