reinstall after disk crash

tI have been running XP on my laptop for some time. It was installed as an
upgrade from w98. The w98 disk has been lost, and my system has crashed. I
have a back up but it is on separate storage, and I cannot access it. I have
attempted to reinstall XP on the new drive but since the disk has never had
an operating system on it the upgrade disk will not install without the W98
disk. Is there a way to install it on the new disk?

If you have the 'Upgrade Edition' of XP Pro you will need to have the
installation CD of any previous version of Windows.

It can be inserted during the installation, when prompted.

If you've lost your copy of the 98 CD or Me CD: see if a neighbour or friend
can assist.
