I have a Compaq Presario that orignally ran ME. I upgraded to XP home edition
about 2 months ago and have nothing but problems. I install and it will run
fine for maybe a week if I'm lucky, than I'll turn on my comp one day and
some file is corrupt or missing and I'll have to reinstall. I've tried using
the repair optian but it needs an admin password... I never remember getting
an admin password... can someone please help me. I can't stand this any
longer. =0(

Unless you've changed it, the Administrator account password is Null
or blank (Just press Enter).

If you are having stability issues like this then it's likely that your PC
may
not be capable of running XP. Without specific Hardware & Software
details it's impossible to state for sure. XP has more stringent
requirements
than the 9X/ME product line. Hardware that may work in those older OS'es
may act erratically in XP. Also some software that was designed for 9X will
not function under XP. Did you run the Upgrade Advisor before you did
the upgrade ? It could also be incorrect or obsolete drivers causing the
problems. XP also requires a hearty amount of RAM, while possible to
run in a 128 or 256 Megabyte footprint the performance will suffer. This
is especially true with all the GUI "Eye-Candy" enabled.

You might post back with hardware details and you'll likely get advice
on whether to continue debugging/diagnosing or take other actions.

Instead of reinstalling use the system file checker, this will replace any
missing or corrupted system file. What is SFC and how to use it can be found
here.

For the password problem when trying to do a repair install.

First try leaving the password blank that may do it, if it doesn't....

There is a bug in WinXP which prevents you from using Recovery Console
even though the right password is typed when prompted....
So, here's the trick.
2. Enable Administrator to Log On Automatically in Recovery Console
3. Reboot into WinXP.
4. Select Start | Run, then type regedit Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup
\RecoveryConsole Change the SecurityLevel DWORD value data to 1.
5. Reboot the PC

Have you ran any hard drive utilities to verify the quality of your hard
drive. You could have sectors of your hard drive going bad courpting the files

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

Wow thank you for all the replies!

If you could tell me what information to post as far as hardware.. and how
to access it I would be more than happy to.

I will definatly do everything that has been suggested here. Thank You so
much!
