RegOpenKeyEx(System\Setup\PID) return error 2

When upgrading from ME to XP professional the subject of
this posting displays as an error. The text of the error
is "... failed to retrieve the Product ID". Can anyone
suggest a method to get around this issue? Or how to get
back to ME after deleting the system files to create space
for the upgrade. The product ID was entered earlier in
the process.
