setup hangs up

i am trying to get a windows xp home edition to complete the installation
process(repair type). i get an erorr message in the set up log that say the
RegOpenKeyEx(System) 2 failed to get PID. is there anyway to stop setup and
go back to the windows xp home edition before i tried the repair. every time
i restart it goes back to the setup. i get the message cd key is not valid
and the set up will not go any further. i have tried 3 new product keys from
microsoft but nothing works. is there anything i can do to stop this setup?
i tried to start in safe mode but the computer says it cannot run safe mode
because setup is running. any suggestions?

Clean install - wipe the drive w/ a 3rd party dos utility (or format w/ the
hard drive's utilities)

Have you tried deleting the partition, recreating the partition and
formatting it before installing XP - sounds like a previous OS gremlin is
lurking about. This can easily be done during the "white text on blue
screen" portion of XP setup, provided you have booted from the XP CD. All
non-pirated versions of the Win2k/XP CD are bootable and contain all the
tools needed to get your PC prepared and setup with Win2k/XP.

Small Note: If you want to learn how to fix/do something, I'll point you to
it, but if you want me to do your work for you, it will cost you $50 USD per
hour - your choice.
