I just fixed a Dell XP home system with the same problem. The problem started when the user updated his system with "Windows Critical Updates" . Repair Console from XP Home CD blocked me at Administrator password. I moved the hard disk to another XP system and followed the instructions from the following link, just doing the edits on Drive D: not Drive C: fhttp://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/cw_boot_toot.htm

Good luck

Ross
