I was downloading and installing a microsoft update when I had a power
outage. When the power came back on my registry was corrupt and none of my
programs now work. Is it any way I can fix this without reinstalling XP and
software packages.

Hi

Do you see any error messages when trying to access your programs? Reboot
your PC and keep tapping the F8 key until you come to a screen that has
'Last Known Good Configuration' as an option. Try that to see if your
programs work.

I did try that and it didn't work. I tried system restore and that won't
work because of the corrupt registry.

If those options don't work, you will have to perform a 'Repair' install of
XP, which should retain your settings, files and programs.

How do you do a repair install when the XP on the disk that came with the
system is older than the XP on the machine.

Hi

You're running SP2 and have a CD from a previous version of XP? If so, you
can either 'Repair' with the CD you have and then upgrade to SP2 again
afterwards, or you can create an SP2 slipstream CD which will perform an SP2
'Repair':

or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:
