Registry values

Can someone explain to me how the value of the registry
variable
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanman
workstation\parameters\enablecleartextpassword
gets modified?

On W2K, if I set this variable to 1, all the control sets
have their values changed to 1 on reboot and the current
control set stays as 1.

On XP, if I do the same thing, I get different results on
each reboot.

What is the equivalent mechanism for setting these values
in XP and making them stay across reboots?

I'd appreciate a reply to: (e-mail address removed) in addition
to posting to this newsgroup.

Thanks

I forgot to ask -- is there a new registry variable which
controls the enablecleartextpassword for XP? We used a
different registry variable for NT
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\P
arameters).

Thanks
Elly
