Registry Restoring

Howdy all;

XP Pro and Home, DT & LT resp.
There are always a plethora of warnings and advice
windows/notes telling us to be certain we back up the
Registry before we change anything in it so we don't go down
crying in our sleep. Well, that's great, and since the
Registry came into being, I've always followed that advice
faithfully. I still do now that I have XP too.
XP's advice about the Registry is a little different than
it used to be. It used to be just a couple files that made
uip ther registry, and it was easy to find out which ones.
I learned that one day in 98 when I "restored" a registry,
per instructions, by clicking on the expoert .reg file, and
ened up with a HUGE Registry full of duplicate entries that
worked OK, albeit a teensy bit sloooowwwwwww!
OK, that's basically my history and might explain why I
sound a little dumb in my next ramblings.

XP still says about the same thing: Be certain to back up
the Registry. OK, but, but, but ... will that still get me
a HUGE registry if I Restore by clicking on the exported
..reg file? I suspect it will and a little test I did today
verified that.
XP has, in its defense, said a time or two to be sure to
export the KEYS & such, and sometimes doesn't make the bold
statement to backup the "registry". So, I don't seem to be
so nutso after all. But ... If I should click on the
exported .reg, will I -still- get a double registry entry?
It seems like the old entry should be deleted before
clicking on the .reg file. Right? Or wrong? Or what? Or
am I completely out in left field?

Now, the next thing I discovered was an article on how to
use backup instead of Regedit to backup the Registry. OK,
that makes sense, and Restoring from a backup also woujld
make sense. So, since the Regedit Export business is so
confusing, I don't even consider using it anymore.
Is that wise, stupid, or indifferent? And yes, I found
backup in Home Edition. Works fine in Home and Pro. Never
tried a Restore from backup, but it makes sense it'll work.

I was sitting here thinking about that again today after
getting a display problem fixed, so I went to the KB article
on how to backup and restore the Registry.
Aaaaaannnnnndddd, that article is about as clear on how to
Restore the Registry as anything in 3, 95 and 98 me, se,
etc. was. I can understand what it says about doing the
backup. But the prose on clicking on the .reg and backup
restore is almost as clear as mud to me for some reason.

Can anyone explain to me in Plain English HOW to use a .REG
file to restore the registry, anything special about using
the backed up .qbf to restore the registry, and if you feel
like it, whether or not my past experiences sound like
nonsense and the ravings of a lunatic, or are probably
accurate?

TIA, & please don't laugh; I'm just lucky I never really
needed to restore a trashed registry!

[[Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to make
a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is
saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of
old and new registry keys.]]
