Registry Problems

Bazza

On booting my Window XP Pro PC, I get the following message

'One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be
recovered by use of a Log or alterate copy. The recovery was
successful'

From Google this could be '1014L ERROR_REGISTRY_RECOVERED'

I disagree with the final sentence - the system is stuffed. However I
have managed to restore the registry hives from a system retore
snapshot directory before the software installs (see history below).

Can you tell me more about this message and what could cause it?
Have I got hardware or software problem?

History
Installed 3 utilities. and rebooted fine. Shutdown system OK
Installed extra 512M RAM.
Booted, got message 4 times. Restored registry before software and
booted without message. Reinstalled one utility. Saved Registry.
Shutdown system OK
Booted, got message once - system usable. Shutdown system OK
Booted, got message once - system unusable. Restore registry from save
above. Reboot no message. (I don't dare shutdown the system again)

Registry Hive file sizes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\default - 266,240 bytes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\sam - 32,768 bytes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\security - 49,152 bytes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software - 35,241,984 bytes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system - 3,145,728 bytes
Is Software too big?

Any help would be apprieciated

From examining your post, I find that there is a cause and effect: if
I'm interpreting your post correctly, everything was fine until you
installed new RAM. Then you started seeing failures. Ergo, your new RAM
is either bad or incompatible with your motherboard and/or the RAM
already in your system. You can test RAM with Memtest86
(www.memtest86.com), but I think you have your answer.
