Hello, I just recovered from this problem

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry Cannot Load The Hive
(File): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software Error

I have followed the advice prescribed by both microsoft and XP experts.
However, when I get to step 2 - restoring the registry to an older, safer
date through the System Volume information I find that there are no restore
points available before my system crashed. My registry is currently set to
repair status. What should I do?

not sure what we could do if
microsoft or microsoft experts
gave you "expert" advice for
your problem.

ultimately, you might simply
want to do a repair installation
with your windows setup cd.

Unfortunately, if there are no restore points, no snapshot folders, you have
basically one option, and that's to reinstall the applications. The
registry contains all the system information, and if there isn't a backup,
you can only recreate it via reinstall.

So, look again to see if you can find a backup, otherwise reinstalling apps
is next. I would suggest that you back up the drive first, so that you
don't lose any data.

But you might consider why this failed, and whether replacing the drive is
worthwhile.
