Registry problem

My laptop just crashed and it won't start at all. I tried to restart from
safemode and safemode doesn't even work. I even tried to re-install xp but
that didn't even worked. Is there a way(s) I can either restore operating
system or just to get data files without formatting? I don't even know
whether I can format c drive or not.

So what err msgs did you get, iether on boot or when you tried to reinstall

Take it to a repair shop and get them to put the hard drive into
another computer and copy your data off on to CD. Then it doesn't
matter if you have to reformat.
