folder association

Friend tried to install Symantec upgrade XP 2000 instead of Home Edition.
All programs and files no longer have any association. There isn't any way
to associate any program to the files. Restore points don't work, not even
in SafeMode. Ran the %systemroot%....rstrui.exe command but since there
isn't an association to the file it won't run. What should I do?
