Registry Hit from Mega Codec Pack

I'm copying this from another thread, whose title was probably too vague to
catch people's attention. :D

Has anyone monitored the installation of this to see what kind of hit it
takes on the registry? I'm tempted to download, but not if it gives me a
lot of registry bloat.

I'm the "Anonymous" who wrote that original message.

The truth is that I haven't measured the number of registry entries
that K-Lite's Mega Codec Pack has placed into my system---however---I
know what can do it.

Install "Total Uninstall"
(http://digilander.libero.it/molearchive3/tun235.zip) and install the
Mega Codec Pack through it. Total Uninstall will give you a report of
all files, folders, registry entires, and everything else that went
into your machine during installation. If you don't like what you see,
use Total Uninstall to uninstall the Codec Pack.

There may be other methods and better methods of getting this
information about the number of registry entires in K-Lite, and so I'll
cordially invite any and all other participants on this newsgroup to
jump in and offer suggestions.

I installed it with InCtrl5, which reports: Keys added 1330, Values added
805. The Inctrl5 report is 707kb.

Wow. Thanks Frank, that's a lot! I'll probably continue downloading codecs
on a case by case basis.

Maybe this is not much, considering that Mega has everything:
http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm

If you don't need the two "alternatives", Real and QuickTime (they take
a lot of space, in the registry and in the system directories), there is
the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, which is the Mega minus the two "alternatives".

Or you can download Mega and select during installation. There are
several profiles, and each profile can be further customized.

Also, the K-Lite packs are generally without problems and do a clean
uninstallation (last time I fully monitored an installation and
uninstallation of the Mega pack was around v. 1.45).

Much obliged for the info, Frank. 'Lite' compared to what? :)

My IC3/4/5 records zipped, total 2.5 meg on around 1500 install tests,
90% of which were uninstalled. I've never installed K-Lite since WMP9
came with a pretty complete set.

And before anyone asks, I have never once re-installed windows. I went
from WIN 3.11 to 95, 98, and 98SE as I moved on to faster computers
but the replaced systems were operating fine.
