registry get 'error opening keys'on some software keys

XP home SP2. when I tried to reload software i am getting a error. went to
the registry and tried to remove the key. get the 'error opening key'. most
keys open some don't. right clicked went to properties that said i did not
have permission tried to change permision would not let me. even tried in
safe mode administrator. Same results
