registry locks up

Win xp home sp2 alienware notebook area 51. I open the registry. right click
on the first key and click permissions. then advanced. If I click on either
of the 2 boxes at the bottom "inherit from parent the permission enties" or
"Replace permisson entries and click ok. the hour glass locks up and I have
to end task to close it.

Why would I try to do this you say? Cause I have a write privilges problem
in device manager for com ports and I thought this could be related. My
registry is backed up with registry fix and Erunt.

I do use the cleaners registry fix and Ccleaner. I fixed the write
privileges problem once before but I restored a clone of my HD. and the
procedure for fixing is not working this time. (this is a seperate post)

I use norton security fully updated and Adaware. I cleaned out online cache
did disk cleanup. I defraged and ran chkdsk. I also ran the sfc /scannow
command.

any ideas?

Your problem may be caused by the registry cleaners you use.
Some people swear by them (without having any solid evidence
about measurable benefits), others think that they are snake oil
at best and damaging at worst. You may have to live with your
problem or else reload Windows from scratch.
