Registry File Failure

Dell Inspiron 5100, XP Professional, Service Pack 2, 512MB Ram. I've had to
restore or repair my file system several times since installing SP2. When
running chkdsk it has been finding bad sectors on the hd. The last error
message I got was: Registry File Failure Can not load (hive) File system
root\system32\config\Security it's log or alternate is either currupt,
absent, or not writeable. Is this a problem with my hard drive failing? Is
SP2 causing a problem? Or does the fact that I may be closing the lid and
sending it into Standby before the computer is finished shutting down
currupting files? I didn't have this problem before SP2 but it may be a
coincidence.

Hi

It's a Registry problem, but may be machine specific. You may have to
perform a 'Repair' install of XP if the documentation that came with your
machine doesn't indicate otherwise.

I was getting ready to do that and stuck the CD in the drive with it set to
boot to CD Rom. Weird thing was it booted up normally. Then after about a
minute I got the message Windows recovered from a serious problem. Report to
Microsoft. I did all that and a web page popped up saying it was under
investigation. That's why I was wondering if it was a SP2 problem or maybe
me closing the lid on the laptop sending it into standby before it had time
to save all info. It seems to only do it the next morning after it's been
off awhile. During the day if I reboot, so far, I haven't had any problems.
