Registry entries protected... help

Guest

I have some entries in my registry that no account seems to be able to read.
When I try to access them using regedit it says that I cant access the entry
but I can change the permissions. No user is listed as having access. When
I try to add modify the entry such that the "Everyone" user has full access
it tells me that I can not change the permissions. I wish it would make up
its mind. :)

Also tried to do a system restore back before this problem occured but the
reg. still had the offending entries (they should have been gone) and they
still were unaccessable.

I may have made matters worse by removing the password from the account
which may have added these entries to the registry... but that was the only
way I could log into the account to see if that account could access the
entires.

Please help! Thanks

You will need to tell us what the registry entries are and exactly what
"no account seems to be able to read" means. Quote error messages in
full and tell us also what you are trying to do with these registry
entries.

More info...

I can not access the keys so my knowlage of them is limited to the name of
the "root" of the key branch. These are names associated with a 3rd part
program and are

Guitar Pro 5 Tabulature
..gp4
..gp3
Guitar Pro 3 Tabulature
..gtp
Guitar Pro Tabulature

When I try to access them in regedit a diag box pops up that says "Error
Opening Key" and "Cannot open .gp3: Error while opening key."

When I select "permissions..." a diag box pops up that says "security" and
"You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for .gp3,
but you can make permission chagnes". When I try to make permission changes
(via adding a group/user name=Everyone on the permission/security tab for the
entry (.gp3 in this case)) a diag box that says "security" "unable to save
permission changes on .gp3. "access is denied."

I dont know if it is relevent, but I had removed the password from the
account that may have been used to add the entries.

I have uninstalled the software and am trying to delete these keys in
preperation for re installing the software (which complains during
instalation that it cant create/access these keys.)

As an aside, why in the world did "system restore" fail to restore the
registry to the state it was in before I started messes with this stuff?

Log in as an administrator and take ownership of the keys in the
Advanced section. Or contact Guitar Pro's tech support for more help.

Malke,

I am not panicin' yet, but.... (great book). Thank you for the help.
Log in as an administrator and take ownership of the keys
in the Advanced section.

I am not totally sure what it is you are refering to by "advanced section",
but if I understood correctly then the results were the same ("security"
"unable to save permission chagnes on .gtp. access is denied.".)

Here are the details....

log in as administrator and run regedit.exe;
select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.gtp;
diag box pops up as before (error opening key/cannont open .gtp: error when
opening key.)
right click .gtp entry and select "permisions...";
diag box pops up as before (security/you do not have permission to view the
current permission settings for .gtp, but you can make permission changes.)
click on the "advanced" button;
click on the "add..." button;
type in "administrator" and click on "check names" to make sure all is well;
click on "ok";
check "full control" "allow" box;
click on "ok";
(we are now back at the "advanced security settings for .gtp" diag. box.)
click on "apply";
diag box pops up (as before) says "security" "unable to save permission
changes on .gtp. accesss is denied."

If that is not what you ment by "take ownership of the keys in the Advanced
section", please explain. If it was... well then... is it time to panic?

Thanks,

Malke,

Sorry.... I just noticed the "owner" tab on the "advanced" window. and now I
get the disstinction between givin a user access and making the user the
owner... that was the part, as you email tried to tell me, that I was missing.

Did what you said and it worked. Thanks! (never paniced). Sorry I was a
bit slow.
