if you are an over keen fool like me. and followed insructions from "from
someone in the know". about deleting upper case files and lower case files
from the editor, without backing the editor up first. is there a safe way of
repairing the damage that i have done? many thanks to anyone that can help.

First thing you should try is restore to an earlier time using System
Restore (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools).

That said, it's not clear what you've done: the built-in registry editor
(regedit) cannot delete files - it's used to make changes to entries in the
Windows Registry. And you can't back up the editor (well, okay...) - you
back up the registry.

So, what exactly do you mean by "deleting upper case files and lower case
files"? Did you trawl through the Registry with regedit and delete
everything you saw that was either all in uppercase or all in lowercase? Or
all references to "uppercase" and "lowercase"?

Anyhow, try System Restore first.

the problem came about when i couldn't locate the dvd drives and was told to
delete upper filters and lower filters that can cause cd access problems. i
started the registry editor located for upper fiters
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318
and was supposed to delete this. and the same for lower filters
.. but i think i may have deleted a whole folder for one or the other. is
there a list availble to view to make a comparison? this happened somtime ago
now and i have been making do with the recorder drive. the upper drive sound
always sounds distorted and i don't think software loads properly. also when
backing up data in the recorder drive, certain programs like genie soft will
not verify discs it seems i can only use dvd-r and cd-r even if the software
is compatable with others.
