Hello
A friend fairly computer un friendly so I'm not sure what he did. He said he
downloaded SP2 for IE6. And the toolbars.
Now there is no IE6
The blue E is on his desktop when you click it Nothing happens. After a
minute the send error box apprears it send error then another error box
appears followed by another and another and another.
After checking his system I found the registry file for the Windows Update
is damaged.
I tried to redownload IE6 it downloads the as it runs the instal program it
starts the whole error box routine keeps appearing.
Years ago just about every ISP provided IE with their programs, now you can
only get it from Microsoft unless you buy a CD, and he doesn't want to buy a
CD

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.

The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.
If you are using WinXP SP2 you will have to uninstall that first.

Hello
I finally got to look in on this pc
We had blizzard and he was sick.
Well After doing almost everything on the prevoius post
It now shows IE6 in add and remove programs
It still gives error box after error box.
Even ran IE 6 repair from add/remove
error box

He was given this pc, original owner was grandmother
He does not have the XP disc to retry to re-install XP
This is the only thing I was unable to do

Also he said something about downloading a toolbar when it crashed
The pc was set up to hibernate after 15 minutes and he has dial up
he said no BUT I think it went into hibernate and he re-started the download

Any other ideas to try to fix

Thank You

Windows XP Service Pack 2 does not show
I did look for it
and the check mark is checked
What shows now is IE6 Sp1
In answer to an earlier question
yes he was running McAfee while downloading.

Try reinstalling SP2.
If that doesn't work I can't see anything besides buying a new copy of
WinXP.

Then that probably means that you don't even have XPsp1 installed.
(XPsp1 would supersede IE6sp1 just as XPsp2 would supersede XPsp1.)

However, if you really do have IE6sp1 installed one option you have available
to you which other XP users don't have is to try an IE Repair (ref. KB194177).
E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Good luck
