Hello, I searched around the web site and I couldn't find
anything. So, here's my question:

My dad just purchased Windows XP Pro Upgrade for me. I
have to register it within 30 days. If I'm correct,
registering secures your system and makes sure you have
purchases a genuine copy of windows. If I were to register
now, and then lets say my computer crashes somehow or my
hd gets fried in a lightning storm, would I be able to
install windows on the computer again? Im guessing it gets
an ip address or something to make sure you are the right
person. But if you moved or something and had to reinstall
it could you reinstall without purchasing another copy of
windows? Does it give you some type of key code that you
need to keep, and enter in incase you reformat?

Im not too great at explaining things, but basicaly what I
want to know is if I registered, moved to a new house and
had to reformat (or just reformat in genral) would I still
be able to install Windows XP Pro Upgrade on my new hard
drive, computer, whatever, without purchasing a new copy
of windows. Thanks,

-Pete

PS: I know that you can only have windows installed on one
system at a time, so I'm guessing that the registration
key (if it even exists) can only be in use once at a time.

I'm just glad there are cracks out there to get around problems like this.
In any case, you are supposed to be able to call Microsoft and get a new
code if you ever run into any problems registering XP on a new computer.

Cracks do not "get around problems like this". Cracks make you criminal and
make prices higher for the rest of us. If you like a piece of software
enough to use it, pay for it. If you can't afford it, then save until you
can.

What you have to do - and the machine will stop working if you don't -
is *activate*, not register. I would not bother with the register bit,
certainly not more than once. You can activate over and over on the
same machine. Read up at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm for more.

To do it, get on the net and go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

Take the 'activate over the internet now, skip the register, and it will
take 20 seconds or so
