I just purchased a laptop and it has windows xp home edition pre-installed.
How do I register my copy of this version? When I look up the registration
info it says registered to" user". How do I get it to show my information?
I looked everywhere on the microsoft web and couldnt find it.
Thanks you anyone that can help.

Navigate to;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
and edit the Reg_Sz strings:

"RegisteredOrganization"
"RegisteredOwner"

Registering with MS which is offered at the time of installation but can
be done later is not required and is of no practical value.
Activation on the other hand in mandatory. Since your laptop came
preinstalled it's already activated.

If you want you can change the name of the registered owner and
organization in the registry, which is the info that will show up on the
General tab of the system properties dialog box.

Start | Run | Regedit to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOrganization
