Registering Windows XP with a new user name

I just bought a refurbished laptop and XP has been registered. To get the
computer in my name I can format the hard drive and reinstall, but, will I be
able to re-register Windows XP in my name?

If it was bought and obtained according to the EULA agreement with
Microsoft, and if not, than they will be able to determine if it is
Pirateware.

I don't think it's pirated, I have the product recovery disks, which has not
been opened and packaged from Microsoft, and it states on the package that
the authentication label should be attached to your computer, and the label
is on the back of the laptop, but what will happen when I try to register it
in my name, seeing that it's already in someone else's name?

If you go to activate and register it, you might have to activate by phone,
you might. And if so, at the time of speaking to the Microsoft Rep. you can
explain that it was purchased according to the EULA, the activation problem
might not even arise, if it is the original pc with software, then it will
pass the "Step Check" that the software does to recognize the hardware. It
checks Motherboard, Harddrive, other Hardware Locations and as all or most
of them pass the step check than it should be fine, UNLESS there has or will
be Major Hardware changes internally. As far as the registration, it should
be a breeze, when you reinstall the XP, when it register's it does not ask
for alot of personal information, just some basic. BUT with Laptops, Make
sure you have all of the drivers ( sound, monitor, etc.) before the
reinstall. If Not, you can experience some problems.

Let me clarify myself, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, if you are only
registering in your name, than I would not see a problem, and if you are
Reinstalling and re-doing the installation all over, then refer to my Other
Post, before this one. Let me know if there are other questions, I monitor
the newsgroup at random and frequently.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your wisest course
of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start fresh.
You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have
filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the
original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

However, to fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP,
you can use Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).

This is the way to change the registered owner:

You can change the registration information after you install Windows XP by
editing the registry.

a.. Click Start and click Run.

a.. Type regedit and click OK.

a.. Expand the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

a.. In the right pane, double click RegisteredOrganization.

a.. Type in the new organization name and click OK.

a.. Double click RegisteredOwner.

a.. Type in the new name of the registered owner and click OK.

a.. Close the Registry Editor.
