Re-registering XP

I just bought a refurbished Laptop which had been registered in the previous
owner's name. I can re-install windows to get the computer in my name, but
will I be able to re-register XP, and if so, how?

You can change the owner's name by following the procedure
outlined here:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/modify_registered_owner_and_organization.htm

You can also use the fix from Kelly's excellent web site here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Downoad and run # 7 on the right.

Registering ownership of the PC has absolutely nothing to do with
Windows XP product activation.

Before you go reinstalling XP, make sure you have a valid CD key
to use during activation. Look on the bottom of the laptop for a
sticker with a 25 digit CD key. If you weren't provided with a
valid key then you might want to contact the person who sold you
the laptop and ask them for the correct product ID.

Let me mention, that I do have the the Microsoft recovery disks that comes
with this computer, and the authentication label is on the back of my laptop,
but I don't know exactly what I wiil experience, when I try to register XP im
my name, when it is already in someone's else's name

As far as my understanding, and correct me folks if I am wrong. The issue of
WinXP lies with XP staying with the original PC it was bought or
preinstalled, the registration of the PC in another name is irrelevent, as
long as the PC was obtained and purchased according to the EULA. Give me
some feedback,

Mick

There is nothing magical nor illegal about manually changing the registered
user.Microsoft doesn't care who owns the machine, only that XP is installed on
one machine. As for the Recovery Disks, most of these used by HP,Dell, etc work
by reinstalling OS and require no user activation. At least till now they
worked that way, still questions about that with Microsoft's new activation
policies not answered. But,should you run the Recovery Disks and need to do an
activation there should be no problem with changing owners.

Sooner or later, you will need the special disks or a real XP cd.

I don't think you have a problem.
Your XP version is tied to the PC not the user.
