Registering CD

Hi All,

I hope you can assist me with this. I am wanting to re-install my Windows XP
Pro SP2 but can't find my CD. I wrote down my product key number from when I
purchased from Tiger Direct. I was told that I can get a replacement for $30
with my receipt (which I have) and my product number. My question (after all
that) is would I be able to use another copy of Windows XP Pro 2 which a
friend has. Apparently it is commercial and doesn't ask for a number. Can't
trust that too much, but would I after the install be able to place my
product number onto the OS? If so, could someone lead me (step-by-step)
through this?

Thanks,
Sam

You could use a friend's CD only if it is for the same version and type
of license as yours.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD/license
(OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are purchased.
For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail
version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice versa.
An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD, and
vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD.
Bottom line: Product Keys and CD/license types cannot be mixed & matched.

As the others told you, your key will only work with exactly the same type of disk.
But since you don't have your disk any longer, $30 would be a good investment against future needs.
