Hello
I acquired a computer awhile back, and low and behold
after I installed the windows update CD, I found tha
I am now being asked to register the copy in 30 days

After doing a bit of research, I think I have verified tha
the OS was bootlegged

Ok, here's the question
I want to license the copy with a valid key
only, I have a lot of programs installed, and I reall
don't want to have to reinstall all of these programs

Is there a way I can simply purchase the key an
use it to validate the copy of XP that I already hav
running

Thank
Dave Moor

Yeah, but plan on having to do a clean install to get it to work.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

If it is a retail copy of XP then you should be able to change the product key after you call Microsoft and purchas a new one

If your copy is to be considered a "Volume Licence" copy of XP a retail product key may or may not work. Soemtimes a clean install is warranted

Here is an article which may help you out

How to change the Volume Licensing product key on a Windows XP SP1-based compute
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328874

1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

4.. In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
5.. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
6.. Click Start, and then click Run.
7.. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

8.. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.
9.. Click Change Product key.
10.. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
11.. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:
Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.

12.. Click OK.
13.. Install SP1 for Windows XP.

If you cannot restart Windows after you install SP1, press F8 when you restart the computer, select Last Known Good Configuration, and then repeat this procedure.

Others have given good advice; I just want to chime in and point out
that you don't have to "register" the OS, but you do have to
"activate" it. I think that's what you are really asking about.

Be careful with terminology as this affects the advice directly.
