Registered File Types

In Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > File Types,
how do file types get on this list ?

I'm having trouble with .tif files, and I see they
are 'registered' to a program I never use. They don't open
with that program, they open with Windows Picture and Fax
viewer.

Just how do file types get 'registered', and why are my
files not opening with that program ?

thanks

Sometimes they are pre-registered when Windows installs, and sometimes they
are registered when You install a program that uses a filetype.

In folder options, there is a place where you can click on a file type, and
choose where it opens. Highlight the filetype and hit Change under opens
with.

Either through the folder options in Explorer, the folder options tab in the
control panel, or values in the registry. The original version comes from
direct modification of the registry during setup.
Exact directions may be found in the help file.
