What do you recommend as a freeware register cleaner. I particularly want to
clean-up start-up programmes that I have turned off in msconfig.
thanks

I find this the best way , install & then go to Control Panel & right
click on entry to delete.

Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you
to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's
simple to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden
your system. A valuable tool for system administrators!

Startup Control Panel is compatible with all modern versions of
Windows, including Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.

Try CrapCleaner. My win98 system has been very stable since I started
using CrapCleaner.

MSConfig a tool coming with Windows includes a basic startup manager
which allows you to enable/disable auto-start programs. It does not
however allow you to completely remove an entry from the list.

This is where MSConfig Cleanup comes in! It scans the startup
configurations and allows you to remove any item that has been
previously disabled via MSConfig.

I'll second that. I use it all the time on W98SE

Same here. Note, as well, that if you choose "disable" instead of
"delete", it acts as a permanent way to avoid having a program replace
its key into the startup menu.

I also really like Mike Lin's "StartUp Monitor" (same main pages) which
nips that behaviour in the bud by popping up a yes/no dialogue box
whenever any program tries to insert itself into the startup sequence.
(The monitor does, of course, have to be running in the background to
work, but it's saved me a lot of aggro -- particularly when installing
programs which try to activate half a dozen startup entries.)
