Regedit

I have a e-Machine 2Ghz with 1G Ram installed running WinXP. Just today I
had to restore my PC using the e-Machine restore CDs. Now when attempting
to run regedit (start, run regedit, ok) the program does not run as it
should. It will startup and allow you to drill down 1 or 2 menus then it
just closes up. The whole cycle only covers about 4-5 seconds. Can anyone
help or make any suggestions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

If you open regedit and let it sit, does it still shut down after a few
seconds?
Have you reinstalled and updated your antivirus software as well?

Rick,

Yes, it does and I have re-installed my virus protection as well.

Thanks,

Greetings --

The type of behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Taskmgr.exe and MSConfig.exe (for WinXP), is typical behavior of more
than one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

Symantec Security Check

Read the links Bruce posted, as that behavior is typical of a viral
infection. In the meantime, to ease the pain of cleanup, use the emergency

Rick & Bruce,

I would like to say thank you very much. The suggestions you gave cleared
up my problem. I am still not sure how it got past my virus scanner, but an
occurrence of the W32.SpyBot.Worm was detected on my pc. I double-checked
the Registry and all the values indicated are now correct.

Again Thanks So Much,
James
