Regedit Will Not Remain Open

I have a friend who is running Windows XP-Home Edition. His kids have
installed lots of junk and he ask me to clean some of it up, since it is not
running properly. I installed Ad-Aware 6.0 and Spybot to help clean things
out. I uninstalled a few items that I know to be junk that is tacked on
with game installation programs. I installed a RegCleaner to add to the
cleaning effects.

I want to be able to get into the Registry (RegEdit) and see what all is in
the HKLM-Run section. When I do this, it comes up fine. It will only stay
up for 10-seconds or less before it automatically closes. I don't know what
is killing the RegEdit Tool. It won't stay open long enough for me to drill
down to the HKLM-Run section.

Any Clues as to what could be killing the RegEdit Tool? Odd that runs for
5-10 seconds.

Thanks

Sounds like a virus. Many types of viruses "kill" regedit.exe on
purpose to keep you from removing the offenders.

Have you run a good AV program or done an on line scan?

Also - try renaming regedit.exe to regedit.com and see if it'll run.

Another thing to try is to run regedit.exe from safe mode.
