regedit

Using run | regedit, the editor flashes on for a few seconds then disappears. When I attempt to go back to a known good restore
point, XP reboots with the message that no changes have taken place and that I should attempt to use an earlier restore point. That
also gives the same result.
How do I resolve this?

Thanks Wesley,

My system acts exactly as described in the http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ToolsQuit.htm link.
I use Norton AV and update automatically. Ran Complete Norton AV scan, then ran the online version of both Norton and McAfee. All
resulted in no finds (i.e. virus and worm free). Got "regedit" working by using Doug Knox's Emergency Utility and reviewed the
registry for all the keys mentioned in the link, namely:
W32.HLLW.Kefy
W32.HLLW.Cydog@mm
Backdoor.IRC.Yoink.A
Backdoor.Volac.dr
W32.Kwbot.R.Worm
W32.spybot.worm

but found nothing.

[[Extracting new copies of these files with the same name will not help.]]
The above statement will be true until whatever you may've had is all gone.

Run System File Checker.

Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow |OK
Have your XP CD ready to stick in your CD drive.

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

Wesley,

My XP was factory loaded on this Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505 lappy. Will the Toshiba Applications/Drivers CD work? Don't really
want to reformat the HD at this time.

Unless you want to do freelance script debugging.........

Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
CHECK:
 Disable script debugging
[Specifies whether you want to turn off your script debugger, if one is
installed. Script debuggers are used by Web site developers to test programs
and scripts on their Web pages.]
UNCheck:
Display a notification about every script error
[Specifies whether to display the actual script errors when a page does not
appear properly due to problems with its scripting. This feature is off by
default, but is useful to developers when testing Web pages.]
Apply | OK

Art;

With an OEM CD, Toshiba should've loaded the I386 folder on your machine.
C:\WINDOWS\I386. SFC should look there after looking in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache.
