regedit & Task Manager open then immediately close

I'm having a problem with regedit and Task Manager. They
will open and show up on the screen, but then they
immediately close without generating any error messages.
I've run two different virus scans (Mcafee and one other),
niether of which found any infected files.

All other applications seem to be working OK. the
processing speed is not noticably different from before
the problem began.

We're running Windows XP Pro on a Pentium 333 system with
128Mb of RAM. The system was working fine for a long time.
MSN Instant Messenger is being used on this machine quite
a bit. Could that be the cause???

Dave, check here. This behavior can be caused by a virus. One of three:
