regedit--regedit.exe

Please can you help me,when i go to start then run,i type regedit or
regedit.exe i dont get a popup screen i go to regedit,with a list of titles
on the left,and on the right ,i have name type data
ab(default) reg_sz value not set

i know i have a problem somewhere, because i cant uninstall and reinstall
certain programes ie sp2 , real player to mention just two,i am not very
computer minded and would be very greatful for you help

From what you describe:
(deciphering the message)

Start --> RUN --> REGEDIT.EXE --> OK -->
Brings up a list of titles on the left and on the right :
name type blah blah blah....

Yes - that's regedit - why are you running it if you do not know what it is?

You need to go with explaining what you understand - don't go beyond that
yet....

- What is it you have (Windows XP what? Home Edition? Professional? Media
Center? x64? Tablet PC?)?
- What is it you are trying to accomplish?
- What errors (word for word) do you get when you try to accomplish such
things?

Regedit does not furnish a popup screen.

Otherwise, follow Shenan Stanley's advice. It is very easy to get XP into
a non booting state because Regedit is neither fault tolerant nor fail safe.
Furthermore, it is beginner hostile.

Thankyou,i was running it because of an answer to a previous post,regarding trying to uninstall programmes and only getting error messages windows cant find,and the same when i try to install windows has encounted a problem.the post said after run a popup box would appear,which i dont get.i am on xp home edition.
