Regedit not responding

Tried to backup the registry today on my new Gateway desktop with Vista
Ultimate. With "Computer" Highlighted, I clicked file / Export / 04-05-07
(file name).
The file was created but regedit window bar says "Registry Editor (not
responding)", and the menu bar is missing. Problem also exists trying to
backup HKEY Local machine and Classes_Root. Anone with any ideas or
suggestions to troubleshoot?

Vista registry is much larger than previous version, when you next backup,
just leave it for a while to work, takes me about 40mins to complete the
backup, but thats on a laptop.
Intel Pentium M 1.6Ghz, 1.24GB DDR2 100GB 5400RPM Disk so should be half
that on a desktop as a rough guide.

Don't know why you're having these problems. Vista works GREAT here! No
problems at all. It's the greatest operating system Microsoft ever sold us.
If there's a problem it's the thing between the chair and the keyboard.

Mark, thank you for your response. However, this is not the answer.
Registry Editor actualy stops responding shortly after creating the *.reg
file. If I do not execute an export, the editor works just fine. The backup
file itself also is created and apears to be just fine. I have followed the
"Not responding" message in the Windows Title bar, and it appears after the
file is created (only takes a few seconds) and corresponds at the same time
that Task manager identifies the program as not responding. Also, If I click
around a bit, I can get the editor to come back to life. Wonder if there is
a problem associated with Notepad which I understand is used to create the
file?

Nostop, please limit your responses to solutions and suggestions etc.
Opinions are fine, but this is not the conduiit for that purpose.
