I know how important the registry is, and it's not to be
messed with. But I have a lot of items in there that are
for programs no longer on the PC, and would like to clean
it up. How far shoul I go, and what is a definate "Don't
do it!"

As long as you do a registry backup,then do a search and destroy for
specific name tags you know are no longer on your machine or used by other
existing applications, you should be okay.

There is a nice little program called System Mechanic
that does an amazing job of cleaning the registry. It
always cleans up orphaned files, dead shortcuts etc.

I use it quite often to perform a little extra maintence
on my system. Cant remember the URL but if you do a seach
in Google you should find it no problem.
