reformatting and reinstalling xp home

my hp computer with xp home has become so slow that i am
going to add 256megs of ram which should help. i would
like to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the
operating system but the computer came loaded with xp and
i don't have a restore disk. isn't the operating system
stored on a partition that i can get to and re-install
from there?
