Reformat & Clean Install of Windows XP SP1 Home Edition

-- The computer boots from floppy disk, so using a different computer I
downloaded the setup boot disk 6 disk set from Microsoft, saved the file and
burned it to CD, then I copied to the appropriate 6 floppy disks. I followed
all the instructions for the reformat, etc. I used the original CD for
Windows XP SP1 and things were going well until I received the message that
"clspack.exe, javacypt.dll, javaperm.hlp, javaprxy.dll, javart.dll,
javasec.hlp, jdbgmgr.exe, jview.exe, msawt.dll, msjava.dll, msjdbc10.dll,
nt5java.inf, vmhelper.dll, vjview.exe, dx3j.dll, jit.dll files could not be
loaded. I went ahead with the install. So far, things look ok, but no sound
at all. Never had this problem on original or subsequent installs. Same disk,
same computer. Can someone give me a little advice or assistance on this
matter, please? Have not yet been able to get online with that computer, so
do not know how IE or other applications might work. Am using the other
computer for that at the moment. I sure miss the sounds! Thanks.

I'm not sure what you did but a winxp cd is bootable, though you may have to
enable boot from cd in the bios.

After installing you would need to install your chipset and other hw drivers
from manu cd's or sites.
If its an OEM PC, eg Dell/HP etc or any Laptop from the PC manu, otherwise
from individual hw manu sites.
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86:
http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the
hard drive maufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If
both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard
manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.

-- I reset the bios to boot from CD, but the computer is older and it would
not do so. That was my first try. I finally had to go with the floppy to get
the job done. This is not the first time I have had to reformat this hard
drive and install Windows XP, but it is the first time I have had these
problems. Thanks for your response.

-- Thanks for your response. I will do that memory test. I have already gone
through and checked on all the drivers and they say they are ok. I will
follow your suggestions to see if I can narrow it down a little more. I am
hoping there is nothing wrong with the Windows XP SP1 CD. As I said, all
seems to be working so far except for the sound.

Then if you get msgs during the install re 'unable to load/copy/install'
certain files then likely a hardware problem
I would as a starter test the memory http://www.memtest.org/
You download/create the bootable floppy and run it for several hours.
Also determin the make of your HD, visit their site and do the same with
their utility
good luck

I had exactly the same problem. I also had the same files the setup
couldn't copy from the SP1 Home upgrade cd. I tried a XP Professional
SP2 Full cd and a Home upgrade cd without SP1 or 2, both installed fine
with bootdiskettes! So it was no hardwareproblem.

I have then tried the cd that I had problems with on another computer
where I was able to boot the cd without the floppy disks, result: no
problems! Then to check if it also worked WITH the six bootdisks on
that other computer, result: I got the same errors!!!

So the six SP1 bootdisks don't work with the cd!!!! I will try to make
a slipstreamed cd with sp2 and try to install it with SP2
bootdiskettes.

Hope it helps!

Cheers.
