Reformat causes need to activate XP Pro Genuine software

Hi,

I've had this computer for a couple of years. My "ex" got it from his job
who was selling their old computers so it came with Win XP Pro already
installed. I have an authentic cd with the halogram and product ID on it but
of course nothing else. My computer was always working fine, until I got a
nasty virus about a month ago. I lost everything. This virus had got up into
my registry, files, the whole kit & kaboodle, so I had to wipe everything out
and start new. The only other thing new on my computer is that I had just
bought a new cd/dvd drive, but I messed with just about everything trying to
get that virus off the computer because it even disabled my ability to access
the internet.

Since I reinstalled the OS (WinXP), I've got this popup key that says to
activate it. I've activated my new (straight out the package) Office 2k3 with
no problem, but the OS will not take. I have installed and reinstalled it but
no go.

Any thoughts? I called MS and the "robot" on the phone just says, "Sorry,
you are short.", and hangs up on me. I think I have extenuating circumstances
because the software is good but it doesn't know my computer anymore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help offered in advance!

If it says "you are short" it must mean nos.or letters short in the product
key.
Either way,if you fill all boxes and it doesnt take,a ms rep then enters for
the registration,i'd guess not enough is getting entered.Have you tried
activating
thru the internet instead of the phone option....Here's another # you could
try

If the phone activation is not working for you (and the Internet activation
did not first) - then my assumption is that the CD Key you entered was
incorrect in some way. Double-check it.

Recognition of your computer has nothing to do with it at this point. It's
been WAY more than 120 days since the firsdt time that CD Key was
activated - so it wouldn't likely matter what hardware it was installed on
if it was a valid CD Key. If it will not activate - then you may have been
stuck with a bad key this whole time or you typed in the wrong CD Key (off
by a "B"/"8" or "1"/"I" or something) and that number just cannot be
activated.

You may have to purchase a new copy if you are sure you entered the correct
CD Key when you installed each time.

NOT ture if the PC is using a large OEM version like Dell, HP and Gateway.
Microsoft has blocked all Internet activations for these.

My apologies. "you are short" was slang for "that's wrong" or "Sorry...."

I entered the correct Product letters directly from the Windows XP Pro disc,
Ver. 2002. There's an orange "product Key" sticker on the back of the cd case
and the cd is exactly like what you'd buy off the shelf in the store. The cd
costs a lot of money so I cannot afford to buy another one. This one should
be sufficient! It says "Don't Lose This Number" and I have NOT lost it so
this cd should work.

Every piece of MS software that I have works fine but it also was not on my
computer until after I reformatted it and added the new software. This is the
hologram cd disc and it is not a bootleg. It is an authentic store-bought cd
in the case and I have 1 day (maybe a couple of hours) left on this stupid
activation thing.

Sorry for the confusion.
