I've aquired a computer that originally had windows 98
installed on it. Now it has windows xp. I believe it was a
total install of windows xp because I can't find an
upgrade in add/remove programs. I'm trying to remove
windows xp, reformat the c drive and install windows 98
again. Can anyone help here?

Download and create a boot disk from bootdisk.com. Boot from the floppy you
create and format the C drive. You can then install 98. If it's 98SE, you
can boot from that cd and run setup after the format.

Boot a Win98 startup floppy.

Use its FDISK to delete the partition where XP is - this will probably
be an NTFS partition and hence appear as a 'non-DOS' one. On starting
FDISK be careful to say Y to 'Large disk support?'

Then make a new 'DOS primary partition' of suitable size for the Win98
C:, (Keep it under 8GB at most for efficient performance with 4k byte
allocation clusters). Reboot (being sure you take CD Support),
FORMAT C:
then go to the Win98 CD and run
SETUP
