Reformat a HD W2000

Guest

I have an IBM T21 laptop running windows 2000 which has become slow with
spyware, etc. I want to reformat the HD completely and start over. I have
the w2000 four boot disks and I have the w2000 pro CD. When I try to
reinstall it does not give me an option to reformat; it only gives me the
option to repair or install a second copy of w2000. Can anyone give me
advice on how to format the HD?

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

If you must format then you will have to boot from the CD - it is the only way
to do it. It requires that you press either F2 or Del when booting when you see
the notice at the bottom of the screen.
That will take you into Bios where you have to go and reset the boot sequence
making CD the uppermost and taking the hard drive and the floppie down to a
lower level.
Save and the machine will reboot with the new information and your choice to
delete partition will appear. Just follow the prompts.
Obviously when you have re-installed the system you need to reset the boot
sequence to HD at the top.

You have all you need except the drivers and the other apps, and the
pertinent data you need like your address book, emails, fonts you've
added, media you've added, and sometime some of the apps have a file(s)
that is your setup, etc. Make sure you have everything you want off the
HDD or transfer it all to an external media. Oh, you might want to get
the pop3 server address off the box before you start.

When you get ready to do it, first go into your BIOS. When you first
boot tap the delete key, or what ever. Look at the first splash screen
and it will say, if the delete key isn't the right one. When you get in,
make your first boot device the CD, if your CD is bootable. If not place
the first floppy in the machine before you turn it on.

You have the option of removing the partition(s) and reinstalling them.
Usually one basic partition is fine. Afterward Format in NTFS or FAT32
and then follow the prompts to install windows.

Boot from the CD, and when it doese the "Searching for Previous
Versions of Microsoft Windows" and comes up with the 2KPRO install you
have, press escape. Then, you will need to delete your old partition
by highlighting it, pressing D, then ENTER, then L. Then make a new
partition to install WIN2KPRO to. I recomend making two partitions,
one for the OS and programs, and the second where you can store all
your personal data to, so if you have to reinstall again, your data
will still be in that other partiton.
