W2000 stalls while loading

W2000 was getting stalled on bootup - the "thermometer" just stuck halfway. After a day's work, we decided we needed a new disk drive. So I installed one, reinstalled all the software - all went fine. Last thing, went online, installed ZoneAlarm and downloaded McAfee (I have a subscription). And it found two worms, deleted two (system) files, and now it stalls on bootup again. Question - how do I get to repair or reinstall W2000, when I'm stuck in no-mans-land? I'd like to reformat and start from scratch, but how? By the way, I've checked all the software disks with Norton on another PC, and found nothing suspect.

You can always get a boot disk, like W98SE and run fdisk
to wipe the drive of all partitions. Also, you should be
able to run a new install from the W2K CD. Select new
install. When given the option delete the current
partition and create a new one. Then run the install.

I would question whether the McAfee is actually finding a
virus or not. I would try running Norton and see if it
finds the same thing. If it does, then I would question
your W2K installation disk. Sounds weird, but it could be
corrupt if not obtained "correctly".
