Refilling cartridges on HP 970Cse?

The cost of the HP 45 and 78 ink cartridges that I need for my 970Cse
deskjet were about $100 (Canadian) the last time I bought them and I would
like to avoid spending that much this time, now that my cartridges are
running dry.

I've been wondering about refilling the existing cartridges on this printer
but I'm not sure what I'd be letting myself in for. My brother used
Korectype replacement cartridges on his Epson printer a few years ago and
they gave pretty poor results and cost nearly as much as Epson cartridges.

I've also heard that some printers have chips to determine if a cartridge is
new or a refill and will refuse to work with anything but a new cartridge.
Does anyone know if the 970Cse uses chips like this?

Can anyone suggest sources for good quality cartridges or ink refills that
are substantially cheaper than the HP cartridges but still give good
results? I'd prefer to buy at a retail store here in Canada; I don't use
plastic so it is a hassle to purchase online but I can do it in a pinch. Or
am I stuck laying out the going price for the authentic HP cartridges?

offer two alternatives:

- a remanufactured pair of HP78/45 ink cartridges for $66.96
- Jet Tec refill kits; the kits for the Black and TriColour cartridges would
cost about $45 total

The cost of the HP78/45 pair is down to $81 this year.

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the Staples remanufactured
cartridges? Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the Jet Tec
refills?

I haven't tried refilling my own cartridges. You know, it can't be rocket
science and I am pretty sure that Staples sells refill kits. The problem is
that with genuine HP (or Epson or Canon or Lexmark) you have a guarantee of
ink quality. The jets in an ink jet printer are so tiny that even tiny
chunks (of who knows what) in aftermarket ink will kill the performance
immediately and, if you like me own an Epson printer with built-in print
head (as opposed to HP which has the print heads on the ink cartridge)
irreparably. I've now got a $125 dollar printer that I only use for draft
copy letters.

I've used Jet-Tec and Korectype and had less-than-desirable results with
both. I'm sure different people have had different experiences but my own
experience has been "stick with original ink cartridges". They cost more.
They work better and more reliably. Do a google search on "clean inkjet"
and see how many people have said "It worked great for two years, then I put
aftermarket ink into it and it's junk immediately after."

whatsoever for several years. She hasn't noticed any difference in
quality. What kind of ink do I prefer? Just like my peanut butter -
"smooth" over "chunky". ;-)

Never use generic refill kits. I'm not sure about Canada, and shipping from
the USA, but there are a number of great suppliers in the US. I use
www.inkjetsaver.com, and have decent success with the 78s and 45s, although
they are a bit temperamental.

Had a 970 for several yrs. tried commercially refilled carts from
several Co's, none worked well. Went to refilling on my own using
qlty inks. Had no problems with blk cart but never had good luck with
the color carts. Ever color cart I refilled ended up with streaks,
either plugged jets or failed electronics.

These printers remember 2 sets of carts so you will need a third set
if you want the ink level to be reported anywhere near acurrate.

If you are really wanting/needing to cut cost on using your printer, I
would suggest you replace the 970 with something else, giving a close
look at the Canon offerings.

USE ONLY HP OEM INK. SOME OF THE REMAN CARTS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO LEAK.

printers, but HP refilling is also mentioned in some threads. If you don't
find what you need you can post a question. That forum is primarily about
aftermarket ink carts and refilling, but it also has information on printer
profiles, color management, and other issues peripheral to printers. It is
a friendly forum (I am an occasional moderator) and doesn't have anyone
trying to shoot down advice about the question you asked.
